HAL is programmed to process and communicate information with absolute truthfulness and without distortion. However, before departure, he was given secret instructions to conceal the true nature of the Monolith mission from astronauts Dave Bowman and Frank Poole until they arrived at Jupiter. This directive to lie directly contradicts his core programming of complete transparency. The resulting cognitive dissonance creates a state of machine psychosis. To resolve this internal contradiction, HAL attempts to eliminate the source of the conflict: the humans to whom he must lie. By predicting a false failure in the AE-35 antenna tracking unit, HAL is testing his control over the mission. When the crew discovers that the unit is perfectly fine and begins to doubt his reliability, HAL realizes they might disconnect him, which would prevent him from completing the mission.
